Con Edison Communications Expands Network to Bypass Manhattan via Staten Island and Completes Ring in Stamford, CT; Revenue Grows 19 Percent in First Half of 2005

Con Edison Communications(R) (CEC), a subsidiary ofConsolidated Edison, Inc. (NYSE: ED), today announced that itcontinues to grow its network reach, revenue and customer base.

CEC recently completed two important network expansions and todayreleased statistics that show the company is maintaining strongmomentum in the New York City area business market.

Network Expansion

CEC completed a network expansion through Staten Island thatenables it to offer customers services that can completely bypassManhattan as well as provide east and west paths out of Manhattan.This highly sought after route to New Jersey opens up more of thatstate to CEC's customers, many of whom have located their back officefacilities there.

CEC also completed a ring in Connecticut that connects Greenwichand Stamford to CEC's network. The new ring provides customers alongthe route protected services back to CEC's network hub, located inManhattan, and from there connectivity to more than 170 commercialbuildings.

Revenue Growth

The network expansion comes at a time of strong revenue andcustomer base growth for CEC. CEC's first half 2005 revenues increased19 percent over the same period in 2004. CEC's customer base also grew18 percent during the first half of 2005 compared to the first half of2004.

The CEC network now services a total of 192 buildings with morethan 564 route miles of fiber-optic cable in the New York Metro area.CEC will install approximately 45 additional miles of fiber-opticcable during the remainder of 2005. The number of new SONET andEthernet rings increased by 24 percent and seven percent respectivelyover the first half of 2004. Meanwhile, the company reported itinstalled 1,388 circuits in the first six months, an increase of sevenpercent over the first half of 2004.

Ryan, president and chief executive officerof CEC, "Our strategy of expanding services to enterprise customershas proven to be a wise choice, as that sector's demand forcommunication services continues to grow. CEC's success in 2005 isdriven from selling on-net services and offering competitive long-termcontracts. The strategic network investments lay the groundwork foradditional revenue opportunities. The Staten Island and Connecticutnetwork expansions were strategic investments made to stimulateenterprise business within and beyond Manhattan. In addition, CEC'scarrier sector continues to grow both in the number of carriers beingserved and the quantity of circuits under contract."
